Acolyte Master Sun was at fault, but this is why I still support him

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for episode 7 of The Acolyte.

Summary

  • Master Sun’s mistakes with Brendok were revealed in episode 7 of The Acolyte, and it was shown that he was clearly to blame for a massive tragedy.
  • Sol’s good intentions led to tragic results such as the deaths of the Witches of Brendok, but he showed remorse and wished for redemption.
  • Although Sol has not been fully forgiven, he is still a good person and deserves a chance to right his wrongs.

Master Sun made some terrible mistakes with Brendok in The Acolyte Episode 7, but I’ll still defend it. Lee Jung-jae’s Master Sun has definitely been painted in a different light after The Acolyte Episode 7 revealed what really happened on Brendok. At first, Sol seemed like the perfect Jedi, someone who could feel his emotions without succumbing to them and who showed compassion in all situations. The Acolyte Episode 7 changed that, though I think there’s still something worth defending about Sol.

The Acolyte Episode 7 revealed that the Jedi, including Sol, were far more responsible for the deaths of the Brendok Witches than previously seemed. It featured the events of The Acolyte Episode 3 is presented from a new perspective and it is revealed that Sol was hiding a very dark secret about Brendok. While Sol was certainly at fault for his role in Brendok (he killed Mother Aniseya and chose to save Osha instead of Mae), he is not completely lost. Even with all the mistakes he made, The Acolyte Episode 7 also introduced quite a bit of moral uncertainty into Sol’s story, and I’m still willing to defend it.

Sol is a clear example of a good person making bad decisions.

One of the most important things to consider when judging anyone, including Sol, is intent. No one denies that Sol made some serious mistakes with Brendok. He became too emotionally involved with Osha, enabled Torbin’s mistakes, and escalated the situation between the Jedi and the witches, which eventually culminated in Sol stabbing and killing Mother Aniseya.. The Acolyte Episode 7 was a tragedy of mistakes, but Sol’s role in it was exactly that: a mistake. All of her mistakes came from a desire to do the right thing and protect the vulnerable, not from bad intentions.

Sol was simply the main focus of The Acolyte episode 7, and the main way it demonstrated that good intentions can often lead to terrible results.

I think it’s also important to remember the situation Sol found herself in on Brendok. She didn’t have all the information and only had a fraction of the context that the public had. The information Sol had, while obviously incomplete, painted a pretty clear picture. Mae told him that “Everyone must be sacrificedHe saw Mother Aniseya seemingly attack her own children, and saw her turn into a cloud of ominous black smoke that was clearly a dark side Force power. In a situation of such stress, where it seemed that a child’s life was at stake, Sol’s mistakes seem much more understandable to me.

Sol is essentially a distilled version of the message. The Acolyte He was trying to convey to Brendok that everyone on the planet, from the twins to the witches to the Jedi, had their own idea of what was right and they all made drastic mistakes in trying to achieve it. Sol was the main focus of the The Acolyte Episode 7, and the main way it proved that good intentions can often lead to terrible results. I think Sol only had good intentions and I don’t think he should be condemned for making some (admittedly egregious) mistakes in trying to help others..

Intent is a very important part of enforcing the sentence, but Sol still caused real and devastating harm to all of Brendok’s inhabitants. He should have been punished for his role in them, and even he knew it. When the Jedi returned to their ship in The Acolyte Episode 7, Sol wanted to surrender to the Jedi High Council and face the consequences of his actions. It was only because Indara told him how much that would devastate Osha that he kept his sins against Brendok a secret. Sol wanted to right his wrongs and that makes it easier for me to forgive him.

Sol is not perfect, but he is not a bad person either.

Sol made some serious mistakes with Brendok, and while they may have been worse than most, they weren’t completely damning. At the end of the day, even though he made disastrous mistakes that cost several people their lives, I think Sol is still fundamentally good. The proof of Sol’s morality is in what he did after Brendok. He spent the next 16 years atoning for his sins. Sol robbed Osha of a mother, so he became a father figure to her and countless other younglings. He kept Brendok a secret for years even though he wanted to confess his sin, and he did so to protect Osha.

It’s clear as day that Sol was sorry for the mistakes he made at Brendok, and I think that counts. Redemption is an integral part of Star WarsAnd Sol could easily become the latest example. He’s already shown that he wants to be redeemed, and he’s also shown that he’s rededicated himself to the light since his time of darkness. There is also more goodness in Sol than in other characters who have earned redemption, like Anakin Skywalker or Ben Solo.I think Sol at least deserves a chance to prove he’s worthy of forgiveness.

While I’m still ready to defend Sol, he hasn’t fully earned redemption yet. What he does in the finale of The Acolyte The first season will truly seal his fate. Sol has to tell Osha the truth and he has to earn her forgiveness somehow. If he can’t do that, if Sol can’t prove to the people he hurt that he deserves forgiveness, then I won’t defend him anymore. But until the end of The Acolyte is out, I am willing to give Sol a chance to correct the mistakes of his past.
