Former USSS agent on Trump shooting investigation

(NewsNation) — A former U.S. Secret Service agent believes the investigation into law enforcement’s response to the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump will likely uncover “a lot of mistakes.”

“I think any significant security breach in the overall plan will reveal more cracks in the system on that day,” former USSS officer Charles Marino said on “NewsNation Now.”

The FBI is investigating the shooting, which left one protester dead and two others seriously injured, as an act of domestic terrorism. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, who had held the post since August 2022, resigned Tuesday.

Marino said that was the right decision on Cheatle’s part.

“Ultimately, the Secret Service is still responsible for this,” Marino said. “I think the former director was right in saying that we need to take the lead on this issue, as the Secret Service is responsible for the creation of the plan and its effective implementation. Period.”

The 20-year-old shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, managed to get within 157 yards of the stage where the former president was speaking when he opened fire, despite Iran threatening Trump, forcing the former president’s security to be beefed up in the days leading up to the rally.
