How fines to coach Jaspal Rana for training errors helped Manu Bhaker win bronze at the Paris Olympics

Whether in Luxembourg or Dehradun, Rana had set clear targets for Bhaker even in a regular session. In case he failed to reach the score decided by Rana, Bhaker would pay fines which would then be used to help the needy around the world.

“His working method is very different from that of other people. He usually sets himself a goal and if he scores that goal, then that’s fine.

“And if you don’t get that score, then you add the points that were less in that score, let’s say we decided to get 582 and I got 578. So those four points will be 40 euros and sometimes 400 euros, depending on the situation and the country. You have to donate that amount,” Bhaker said.

Rana, naturally excited given the enormity of the occasion, revealed more details of their mutual agreement.

“I remember once in Dehradun, he bought jaggery worth thousands of rupees to feed the cows. The money was also used to feed beggars around the world.

“We were in Luxembourg recently and he ended up giving 40 euros to the artists in a restaurant. They were also surprised by this gesture,” recalls Rana.

Having finally broken the barrier, Bhaker is in no mood to relax. She feels a medal awaits her in the mixed team events of the 25m pistol and women’s 10m air pistol.

“She has put in a lot of effort to prepare for these Olympics. She has a lot more to offer,” Rana concluded.
