Viktor Orbán, Prime Minister of Hungary, believes that the desire of NATO states to see Russia’s defeat in Ukraine is wrong.

Details: Orbán noted that Hungary is one of NATO’s most loyal members, adding that “31 of NATO’s 32 member states want to defeat the Russians,” referring to all other Alliance members besides his own country.

“Hungary’s position is that we consider this to be a mistake. Even if it means that we are alone against the other 32 states,” he said.
Orbán said that Ukraine’s victory is “not necessary,” but NATO still “contributes to the war, while Hungary contributes to the peace.”
He stated that he did not want “at least one square inch of Hungary to become a Russian military target.”
Orbán added that he felt that the position that “peace can be achieved through war” was being imposed on Hungary.
Orbán stressed that his government will not hinder the NATO mission in Ukraine but will not participate in it either.
Background:
- At the meeting on June 12 between NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, an agreement was reached on the format of interaction regarding non-blocking of NATO decisions on Ukraine by Budapest.
- After the meeting, Stoltenberg expressed hope that the plan, under which NATO would coordinate military aid and training in Ukraine, would be adopted this week at the meeting of defense ministers of NATO member states.
