Drake Maye made two of the most notable plays in the Patriots’ practice on Friday. One went his way, and one didn’t.
Maye connected with fellow rookie Ja’Lynn Polk down the sideline on a play-fake pass for a big gain. Polk leapt for the ball and caught it with both hands as she fell to the ground. The pass was a little shaky, but still found its way to its target.
Maye praised Polk for his efforts to get the ball down.
“He made a good catch,” Maye said. “It wasn’t a great throw, but Polk made a good catch. Great player. I got a little bit off the safety, but he made a good play. You just have to give him a chance, right? That’s what he’s here for, to make plays for us, so I hope to see more of JP.”
The play that didn’t go so well for Maye was a short pass to Rhamondre Stevenson. Linebacker Matthew Judon stepped in and intercepted it.
Judon, wearing his signature red hoodie in the Foxborough heat, charged into the end zone and scored a touchdown pass.
The error did not seem to affect Maye, who admitted that he had misjudged the time and that his reading could have been better.
“It was just a rookie mistake, no pun intended,” Maye said. “I had a deep throw and I was about to throw it towards the end, and in this league they cover the running back, so you have to look outside before you throw it.”
Overall, Maye was 8-for-11 in 11-on-11 games and 9-for-13 in 7-on-7 games, according to the Globe’s Christopher Price. The numbers were comparable to veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett (8-for-11, 9-for-12).
“I feel like I have good ball control,” he said. “I feel like I’m throwing the ball well. There’s a lot of concepts with (offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt) and (quarterbacks coach TC McCartney), who do a good job of breaking them down. … It’s going well. There’s a lot more plays coming up, so I have to keep those in mind.”
