Final score of Panthers vs. Oilers, results: Florida survives Edmonton’s third-period comeback to win Game 3 at SCF

The Oilers did almost everything right in Game 3.

They dominated timing in the offensive zone, led in total shots, and for most of the game played error-free hockey. Florida, however, was too good at capitalizing on mistakes and won 4-3 in Game 3.

After the Oilers tied it 1-1 early in the second period, Stuart Skinner mishandled the puck, leading to a Florida goal. The costly and avoidable mistake sent the Oilers into a spiral.

The Panthers added two more goals over the next six minutes to take a 4-1 lead entering the third period. Florida has the best team in terms of third period point differential in the regular season and playoffs, but this time the Oilers managed to find holes.

Two third period goals put the Panthers on the brink of a potential overtime game, but the Oilers were unable to convert a third, leaving Game 3 with a 3-0 series loss.

They face a tough challenge to overcome a 3-0 series deficit. Only the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs have accomplished such a feat in the Stanley Cup Finals before. Edmonton can begin its comeback in Game 4 on Saturday, June 15.

Panthers vs. Oilers updates, highlights from Game 3 of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final

(All Eastern Time)

Final: Panthers 4, Oilers 3

22:58: Puck was stuck in the corner for most of the final 20 seconds before sending it all over the ice. The Oilers were unable to tie and fell 3-0 in the series.

22:55: Net empty with about a minute left. Florida was inches away from an empty net with full ice, but hits the post.

22:52: Two minutes left and the Oilers trail 4-3. Skinner needs to get out soon.

10:50 p.m.: Oh man, McLeod almost scored another one to tie the game. Great save by Bobrovsky.

22:48: GOAL! McLeod points in Kulak’s shot from the blue line as the Oilers score another. There’s still 5:17 left and the Panthers lead 4-3. There is still a real possibility of this return.

10:45 p.m.: Edmonton just had another scare in their own zone when they hit their own post trying to get the puck around the net. Oil tankers escape that problem.

22:38: The Oilers have dominated over time in the offensive zone, but Bobrovsky has been excellent. The Panthers have also been very efficient in their opportunities. Only 12:52 left and the Panthers lead 4-2.

22:32: GOAL! Broberg hits a shot off Mikkola’s arm to give the Oilers their second goal of the night. The goal counts the same, no matter how it beats Bobrovsky.

22:24: Florida is the best team in the third period in terms of goal difference in the regular season and postseason. They enter tonight winning 4-1.

End of second half: Panthers 4, Oilers 1

22:02: The greasers will join the power play. It will be a 4 against 3 for 28 seconds, which will extend until the third half. Big opportunity for Edmonton here with a lot of open ice.

21:59: The game will be 4 on 4 for the remainder of the period.

21:53: Skinner hasn’t been particularly bad all game, but this second period has been atrocious. It seems like any shot is going to find the net.

21:51: GOAL! This is quickly becoming disastrous for Edmonton. Barkov scores a 2-on-1 goal to put the Panthers up 4-1 with less than five to play.

21:46: GOAL! Bennett hits the top of the net to put the Panthers up 3-1 with 6:03 left in the second period. Florida has capitalized on Edmonton’s mistakes in a big way.

21:43: The Oilers have played a great game so far, barring a few mistakes. Skinner’s play was costly and gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead.

9:40 p.m.: GOAL! Tarasenko scored an easy goal in front of the net after Skinner mishandled the puck behind the net. The Panthers lead 2-1 with 10:48 left.

21:38: Come on, Bobrovsky. He saves Hyman’s shot on the breakaway and then saves an immediate rebound opportunity. The Oilers have 20 shots on goal with 11:16 left in the second period; they had 19 total in Game 2.

21:32: Another excellent opportunity for the Oilers with a deflected shot that left the puck loose in front. Bobrovsky manages to hide it.

9:30 pm: The Oilers have good opportunities, but some shots go straight into Bobrovsky’s chest.

21:24: GOAL! Warren Foegele beats Bobrovsky low to tie the game 1-1 two minutes into the second period. The greasers finally manage to escape.

21:22: Back at full strength, 5 on 5 game.

End of first half: Panthers 1, Oilers 0

21:01: GOAL! Reinhart scores the first goal of the game after a pass from Forsling. Panthers lead 1-0 with one minute left in the period. Still 4 against 4.

20:59: Bobrovsky makes another great save, swallowing Ceci’s shot. The game will go to 4 v 4 after a post-whistle scrum.

20:56: Bobrovsky is just a brick wall. McDavid still can’t find the net and another power play is wasted.

20:52: The Oilers return to the power play with 5:14 left in the first period. Cutting, two minutes.

20:51: The shooting has been much closer tonight compared to Game 2. The Oilers had the early lead in Game 2, but were behind in shooting, which caught up to them late.

20:45: McDavid looks for his shot much more often tonight, but the Panthers overturn the penalty. They have killed the last 40 of 42 opportunities.

20:44: Wow, Bobrovsky makes a good stop on the Draisaitl in one go.

20:41: The Oilers head into the power play via a delay of game penalty. Great opportunity for Edmonton.

20:34: Take a breath, Florida fans. Connor Brown almost scores a shorthanded goal, but Bobrovsky saves another from his blocker. The Panthers had no chance of taking advantage of that lead.

20:32: First penalty of the night for Edmonton for the interference call. Two minute lead for Panthers.

8:30 pm: Florida is already giving Edmonton problems just four minutes in. The Panthers lead 5-2 in shots.

20:25: McDavid gets an early shot on goal, just in front of Bobrovsky. Easy saving.
