The 3 lighting mistakes to avoid according to a Feng Shui expert

Lighting has a huge impact on how we feel in our homes. While each room has its own unique set of lighting considerations, from fixture placement to light bulb brightness, don’t let your home’s lighting fail because of these common mistakes.

Getting the lighting right is something you should never underestimate. From the bedroom to the kitchen, making a few simple adjustments can help create a balanced and harmonious environment in your home.

1. Get rid of overly bright and austere lighting

First things first: Identify which bulbs emit bright, intense lighting. It’s tempting to illuminate dark spaces with white overhead lights, but this often makes the space look too clinical. “Cool-toned lighting can create a hostile environment,” says Ryan Terren, LifeHouse Feng Shui Consultant.

“Using bulbs with different color temperatures together in a room also risks creating an inconsistent environment that will significantly upset the balance of the space and can be confusing,” adds Marlena Kaminska. lights of value‘ designer. Instead, choose soft, diffuse lighting from naturally colored lampshades and warm-toned light bulbs.

2. Avoid overhead lighting that can create shadows and reflections.

There is a general feeling that “big light” is harsh, cold and simply too bright for relaxing spaces like living rooms.

“Recessed ceiling lighting is often frowned upon when it comes to creating a balanced atmosphere,” says Marlena. “You should avoid having a single device as the only source of lighting, as this can cause uneven distribution of light, leaving corners in shadow and creating negative energy.”

The lighting layers are divided into three: task, accent and ambient. Each one fulfills a different but equally important function. Layered lighting not only allows certain spaces to serve multiple purposes, but it can also add texture and dimension to a space.

Try a combination of floor lamps, reading lamps, and wall sconces to balance the space. And while they’re a popular choice, Ryan says you may want to “be wary of hanging lights over countertops and eating areas that are too high, as they can cast uncomfortable glare.”

3. Mismatched Bedroom Lamps

The bedroom is one of the most important rooms for Feng Shui. “If Feng Shui isn’t right, your bedroom could feel cluttered and stressful, affecting your sleep,” says Marlena.

‘According to the principles of Feng Shui, you should always try to create an even balance on both sides of the bed. This applies to the size, height, color and brightness of your table lamps. So if you only have one table lamp in the bedroom or mismatched bases and bulbs, this can ruin the entire space.’

You want your bedroom to be a calm and cozy refuge. Ryan recommends “hanging a pendant lamp in the middle of the room and identical night lights to cast soft, diffused light” throughout the space. In essence, this will create a triangle of light to keep the balance of the room.

And if you have bright lights around your dressing room, “it should be kept neat and minimal” so as not to be too distracting.
