Syed Saddiq says dubious third place in triathlon was an ‘honest mistake’ (VIDEO)

KUALA LUMPUR, July 10 — Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman today took responsibility for an “honest” mistake that earned him third place in a recent triathlon, which was scrapped following allegations of irregularities.

In an Instagram post hours after attempting to address the cheating allegations, Syed Saddiq said he spoke to organizers and technical representatives to have his race result listed as “DNF” or did not finish.

“After comparing this to the data from my watch, there was clearly an error.

“I take full responsibility for that. It was an honest mistake on my part,” he said.

Syed Saddiq previously posted a photo on Instagram of himself holding a third place trophy from the 113th Desaru Triathlon 2024 event held between July 6 and 7.

His time at the event was questioned, specifically his performance on the three bike laps totalling 90km, leading some commentators to suggest he probably only completed two laps or 60km.

He said that although he had checked the information with the technical team, the fault was also his responsibility.

He later offered an unreserved apology to the triathlon community for the incident and added that he would be more cautious with the sport he was a newcomer to.
