Fatal mistakes are made and PBSI calls on BWF to be held accountable

JAKARTA The Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) has called on the Badminton Association of International, BWF, to take responsibility for the fatal error committed in introducing the qualification points for the 2024 Olympic Games.

PBSI Secretary General Fadil Imran said the mistakes committed had violated the rules and noble passions of the Olympic Games.

“The miscalculation made directly by BWF not only harms the Indonesian couple, especially Bagas Maulana/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri, but also all the couples fighting on the Road to Paris 2024,” he said.

The impact of the BWF’s negligence resulted in French men’s doubles pair Ronan Labar/Lucas Corvee securing a ticket to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

In the double qualification of the Road to Paris, they did not qualify, but managed to secure a ticket to Paris thanks to their victory in the legal proceedings before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

At the end of the European tour, Ronan and Lucas were in the qualifying zone for the Olympic Games. However, the BWF revised the classification because it realised that it had made a mistake.

The revised result earned French pair Christo Popov/Toma Junior Popov a ticket to this year’s Olympics. Not satisfied with that, Ronan/Lucas lodged an appeal and got their ticket.

The inclusion of Ronan/Lucas in the Olympics automatically increases the number of male pairs competing in doubles to 17. This will automatically affect the group draw later on.

The four groups, each containing four teams, should now accommodate more than five pairs battling it out in the round-robin system.

“If Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto join the group later, they will compete four times in the group stage. This is very detrimental because there is an additional match,” Fadil said.

In addition, this error in the calculation of points also harmed other Indonesian couples, namely Bagas Maulana/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri.

The loss came at the last event of Badminton Asia 2024. At that time, Bagas/Fikri became the eighth seed in a new count after initially becoming the ninth seed.

The position of Bagas/Fikri, who were chased rather than chased, increased the pressure on them. As a result, the 2022 All England champions immediately lost in the first round.

The end result of this error has meant that the men’s doubles draw has not yet been made. In fact, the draw for the other number was made on Friday.
