New Delhi: The deadline to file your Income Tax Return (ITR) is just around the corner (July 31, 2024). There are chances of making mistakes if you rush through the process. One common area where mistakes can happen is when filling out the income tax payment form. If you have made money by selling property, mutual funds, or shares, and the TDS is not enough to cover what you owe, you will have to pay the capital gains tax yourself using the self-assessment tax option on the ITR e-filing website.

For this, you will need to fill out a tax payment form (challan). You can do this online or by printing it out and filling it out by hand. Make sure you fill it out accurately to avoid any problems just before the deadline. But if you have made a mistake, you can easily correct it. The Income Tax Department allows you to correct errors in Income Tax payment receipts.

How to correct your income tax penalty?

You can use the Receipt Correction feature on the ITR e-filing portal to correct errors related to tax payment details such as incorrect amounts or other errors in the receipt. Here is a simple guide on how to correct a tax payment receipt online using the ITR e-filing portal:

Step 1: Visit the ITR e-filing portal at https://eportal.incometax.gov.in/iec and log in with your credentials.

Step 2: Go to the Services tab and click on the “Challan Correction” button.

Step 3: You will be directed to a new page where you need to click on “Create Challan Correction Request”. This will take you to another page where you can select the details that you need to correct in the challan. Click on “Continue” after making your selections.

Stage 4: On the next page, select the assessment year or enter the tax return identification number (CIN) to start the tax return correction application. Click “Continue” to proceed.

Step 5: Another page will open where you can update the challan details with the necessary corrections. Once you have made the changes, click on “Continue”. A summary of the corrected challan will be displayed. Review it and click on “Continue” if everything is correct.

Step 6: On the next page, you will need to e-verify the challan correction request using options like Aadhaar OTP, Digital Signature Certificate (DSC), Electronic Verification Code (EVC) or other available methods. After successful verification, a confirmation message will be displayed.

If you miss the deadline for submitting the correction of challan online, you will need to send a request letter to your jurisdictional assessing officer (JAO). Include relevant documents like a copy of the challan and a copy of your PAN card. Submit it at the ASK counter at the Income Tax office and get an acknowledgement. The JAO will then process your request accordingly.
