Making a mistake before going on holiday “could cost you £80”

The excitement of going on holiday is palpable, but there’s also a lot to think about. Whether it’s what to pack or what documents to prepare, going on holiday involves some planning.

But homeowners are being warned not to forget one simple thing, or they could end up losing money. Waste expert Paul Jackson has warned Britons about a common mistake that could land them with an £80 fine.

He said: “Homeowners should be aware that incorrect placement of their rubbish bins can result in fines of up to £80. If you leave the bins outside for several days, which may attract pests or is likely to cause a nuisance, you could be hit with a fixed penalty of up to £80 under section 46A of the Environment Protection Act 1990. If you do receive a fine, residents will have the opportunity to appeal the decision.

“A few simple rules of conduct when using bins will help you avoid possible fines. Only take out your bin on collection day and return it as soon as it is empty, and avoid blocking driveways, bus stops, cycle paths and pavements.

“Maintenance of your bin is also important. If you’ve left it outside while you’re away and it’s accidentally damaged, contact your local council to have it replaced or repaired. Also, make sure you’re disposing of your waste in the correct bin, especially as bin colours can vary in different areas.

“Before you leave on holiday, don’t forget to take your rubbish bin inside your home, as leaving it outside can cause problems for both you and your neighbourhood. If you’re away, ask a neighbour or family member to take care of the bins to avoid problems.”
