Ganguly: Endgame Essentials You Need to Know Vol. 1 & Vol. 2

In this video course, GM Surya Ganguly joins IM Sagar Shah and, drawing on his colossal experience, shares rare endgame wisdom. The material focuses primarily on rook vs rook and one-pawn positions, and starts by covering the fundamentals: Lucena, Philidor, and Vancura. But it quickly moves into non-trivial territory, likely to challenge even masters: the elusive theoretical nuances of how to deal with doubled pawns and pawns on the f and h files.

Endgame Essentials You Need to Know Vol. 1: Rook + Pawn vs Rook

Surya presents some clever “rules of thumb” for approaching these tricky endgames, while at the same time stressing the importance of real calculation and understanding, so as not to fall into some crude reductionist trap. Through this course, he promises something that no instructor would ordinarily promise: uncertainty! His goal is not to know everything, which is a pipe dream that can only arise from naivety, but to realize that one can never know enough, and thus to consciously become comfortable with the uncertainty this creates. The cordial camaraderie between Surya and Sagar keeps the talk interesting from start to finish. As the ever-so-enthusiastic host, Sagar does an excellent job of asking pertinent questions every step of the way – questions that a chess student would have in mind when studying such endgames. On the other hand, Surya often switches roles with him, cordially urging him to take the lead and explain the concepts.

Endgame Essentials You Need to Know, Vol. 2: Test Yourself in Rook and Pawn vs. Rook Endgames

The first volume of Demystifying Endgames deals with the essentials of rook vs rook and pawn endgames, covering topics such as Lucena, Philidor, Vancura, and theoretical cases with rook vs rook and pawns on the f and h files. Grandmaster Surya Shekhar Ganguly presents several guidelines for navigating the tricky waters of these theoretical endgames.

In this volume, Surya provides further positions (many of them drawn from high-level Grandmaster games) to help you (a) assess your understanding of the concepts covered in Volume 1 and (b) supplement that understanding. Thus, approximately 70% of the material covered here is the application of previously established ideas, with the remainder comprising rich examples that do not translate directly into any known rules. True to his philosophy that understanding and confusion are two sides of the same coin, Surya reiterates the importance of staying alert and warns against the dangers of using theory as a crutch.

Nick Pert: Typical Mistakes Vol. 1-3

As the National Head Coach for the English Chess Federation, I coach a lot of improving players and I see some typical mistakes that recur. In this DVD I have taken a large collection of games played by players, predominantly in the 1600-1900 rating range, and looked for typical mistakes. I have broken these examples down into various topics, such as “Misjudging Forcing Lines”, “Being Too Materialistic” and “King Safety” amongst others. Each topic has several examples to demonstrate typical mistakes, and there are various tests throughout the DVD so the viewer can try to find the best move in certain positions. This should be a great tool for players to use to improve their middlegame and endgame play. I hope it also highlights areas you need to work on to improve quickly. Enjoy the DVD!

Typical mistakes of players from 1800 to 2000 years

GM Nicholas Pert on his DVD: “Following the success of my previous DVD, Typical Mistakes of Players from 1600-1900, I decided to produce a follow-up DVD aimed at players of a slightly higher level. All the examples are from games played by players rated between 1800 and 2100. This DVD offers slightly more complex material than the previous DVD and I hope it provides an insight into what I believe to be the main mistakes that prevent players of this level from being more successful. I have divided the material into categories such as “when to exchange pieces”, “how to convert an advantage”, “passive pieces”, “anticipating the opponent’s plan”, “openings and pawn structure”. Each section contains several examples illustrating the topic and practical examples allowing the viewer to test their skills. This DVD provides a useful training tool for ambitious players and can highlight mistakes that the viewer should be aware of.”

Typical errors of between 1000 and 1600 players

After the success of the typical mistakes videos aimed at higher rated players, I have decided to focus on the mistakes made by players with ratings between 1000 and 1600.

The video series consists of several chapters, each of which includes a topic for games between players with a score of 1000 and 1600. Various games are explained and then there are many interactive examples for the viewer to try out for themselves.

Hopefully, this will not only help the viewer improve their own game, but will also motivate them to work harder in areas where there may be a weakness.

The chapters focus on key areas such as “Tactics”, “Openings”, “Endgames”, “Attack”, etc. Each chapter will show several games followed by interactive examples. There are also some summary games that highlight several typical mistakes made in the same game.

  • Video length: 4 hours 40 min. (English)
  • With interactive training including video feedback
  • Extra: Database of other model games
  • Including ChessBase – Reader
