New Delhi: England captain Jos Buttler stayed true to his honest nature by admitting the tactical mistake he made during the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-final against India in Guyana on Thursday. England were outplayed by India on all three counts after Jos Buttler won the toss and invited India to bat first on a spin-friendly pitch that became slower as the match progressed.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma made a half-century, scoring 57 runs in 39 balls and Suryakumar Yadav also played, scoring 47 runs in 36 balls.
In reply, England were defeated by just 103 runs and did not bat to complete the quota of 20 overs. Axar Patel got the first English wicket, dismissing captain Buttler. Axar then removed Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali while Kuldeep Yadav also took three important wickets in the match.
England’s mistakes in the match.
Buttler accepted that he did not use Moeen’s services as a bowler. Moeen did not bowl a single over on the spin-friendly Providence Stadium track, while Buttler showed his faith in wrist bowlers Adil Rashid and Liam Livingstone, who made an impact by conceding an economy of 6.00 runs per over.
Buttler praised the Indian bowlers and admitted his mistake in the post-match press conference.
“Obviously, they have some fantastic spinners,” Buttler said. “Both our lads bowled well, but in retrospect, I should have brought on Moeen in that innings, the way the spin was coming through.
“Obviously, with the rain in those conditions, I probably didn’t think it was going to change much,” he added. “And I actually don’t think it was like that. I thought they out-bowled us. They obtained a score above average. So I don’t necessarily think the draw made the difference between the teams.”
India reaches the final unscathed
For the second consecutive World Cup, India will be heading into the final of the showpiece event unbeaten. Rohit Sharma’s men reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup without losing a single match and similarly, they are heading into the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup unbeaten. In Saturday’s showpiece clash, Rohit & Co will take on South Africa, who are also unbeaten.
