This August, Portland-born folk-rock band Fruition will return with How to make mistakestheir first studio album in four years. For their sixth studio record, out August 23, the band’s core quintet — Jay Cobb Anderson, Kellen Asebroek, Mimi Naja, Jeff Leonard and Tyler Thompson — produced the record on their own, recording each of the album’s 13 tracks “live from the stage.” In lyrics, melody and production, the resulting album focuses on old friends living in the moment.

“Saturday Night,” the lead single from How to make mistakes The album is out now, and serves as a testament to the ensemble’s renewed creative energy. Over the past fifteen years, the eclectic quintet has racked up praise for its three-part harmonies and magnetic bluegrass sound. These trademarks are readily apparent on the trailer, which sparkles with soaring vocal overdubs, sinuous slides, and a laid-back groove stitched together with zealous experimental improvisation. “If you’re doing it right, you’re bound to make mistakes,” Anderson explains, “and bruised fruit always tastes a little sweeter.”

To promote the upcoming album, Fruition announced a new set of dates for their 2024 tour. The band will take the stage on July 4 at Kit Carson Park in Taos, NM, with another show in the state capital of Santa Fe the following night at the Railyard. Shortly after, the band is scheduled to play a series of shows in their home state of Oregon, including Veneta’s Oregon Country Fair, scheduled for July 12, and Bend’s Munch and Music on August 1. Mama Magnolia and Joelton Mayfield will support the genre-eclipsing group on select dates. Fruition will go on to make 18 more appearances through the end of September, stopping in Canada, the Mountain West, the Midwest, and the East Coast.
