The Rookie season 7 won’t specifically repeat its biggest mistake from season 6

If you, like many fans, were frustrated with The Rookie S6, we have great news for you.

Nathan Fillion didn’t stay stagnant for long after the end of his hit series Castle, and he soon jumped onto another big TV show, The Rookie, in 2018. Six seasons later, The Rookie is still going strong, with Season 7 currently in development, and after the downfall of the previous installment, the show’s creators are adamant about not repeating their mistakes in the future.

The Rookie S6 ruined its structure

There are basically only two TV show structures to choose from. The serialized format suggests a lot of continuity, with all episodes following the same story, while the episodic format suggests that each episode has a small, self-contained story, often with an overarching plot that connects them to a main story line.

The Rookie was famous for being an episodic series for its first five seasons, but for season six, the producers decided to change things up and went with the serialized approach. Season six primarily followed Monica Stevens’ rise to power, and was unanimously rated as the worst season by fans. The serialized format didn’t work for The Rookie in the slightest, resulting in the disappointing reviews for season six.

The Rookie S7 will return to its origins

After the failure of season six, which thankfully didn’t scare many viewers away from the series, The Rookie isn’t going to make the same mistake twice. Showrunner Alexi Hawley recently sat down with TVLine and talked about plans for season seven, noting that The Rookie would largely return to the episodic format.

“I think we’ll go back to being more of a standalone show with serialized elements because it will be a longer season and I think people like that. Also, there are so many different ways to tell stories, whether it’s big event episodes, romantic comedy episodes or with a big guest star, so it will be fun to get back to that,” Hawley shared.

It’s quite rare that we see showrunners learning from their failures, so this news is definitely very welcome. The Rookie was never meant to be a series, as its short and distinctly different stories have always been its strong point.
