Nigerian man who returned N3.7 million credited to him by mistake receives unexpected link

Timothy Ofoegbu, a Nigerian, has been widely praised on social media for his integrity after returning N3.7 million that was mistakenly transferred to his account. Instead of dealing with the often cumbersome banking procedures, Timothy took a more direct approach by posting about the erroneous deposit on social media.
He shared a screenshot of the credit alert and gave a detailed account of how he managed to return the money to its rightful owner. Her post quickly gained attention and was eventually seen by the person who had mistakenly sent the money. Through this platform they were able to connect and Timothy facilitated the return of the important amount.

“…On Friday morning I went to the bank to inform them and see how it could be transferred back to the owner. It would be a complicated process that will involve a lawyer and even a court order for money laundering and terrorism issues.

“I posted it on social media to get more ideas on how to handle it and, if possible, locate the owner. “That helped a lot.”

When Timothy contacted the sender, he learned that the man based in Niger State was struggling with his health due to an incorrect transfer.

Before returning the money, Timothy said he told the sender to give him the number of the man it was originally intended for.

It was at this point that Timothy discovered that the original recipient of the N3.7 million was a distant relative.

In his words: “…I insisted that he give me the number of the man he wanted to transfer the money to for the background check.

“I got the surprise of my life when I called him. He turned out to be a distant cousin of my mother. We both grew up in Maiduguri. We know each other but we haven’t seen each other since 1992. He screamed with joy and I was happy too.

“This morning they had returned the money to the owner. I had peace like a river in my heart when the money left my account because I know it will bring peace to both men…”

See some reactions to Timothy Ofoegbu’s gesture:

Chidimma Nwosu said: “You did well. “But I think the sender should stop doing mobile transfers for now, since he makes mistakes with the name, you can imagine a loss of 5.2 million in this economy in 6 months.”

Rita Uche Nwafor said: “You and your mother’s maternal cousin have the same surname, which is strange. “Well done.”

Buchi Isra’el Collins said: “I just wanted to see the balance you blocked, that’s all…” My heart was filled with joy reading this testimony. This is the Light we are CALLED to shine in this dark world. Now God is glorified. GLORY TO GOD FOREVER.”
