A doctor has shared three “everyday mistakes” people make that could be “extremely detrimental” to their health. Dr Saurabh Seth took to TikTok to highlight the “routine practices” that many may believe to be “harmless.”
The gastroenterologist issued these warnings to his 359,400 followers on the platform. In the video, which has already racked up more than 20,000 views, he said that common habits could be “harming health.”
His first warning was for those who use cotton swabs to clean their ears. He said that while it may seem like a good way to remove ear wax, it could actually push it deeper, resulting in “impacted earwax, pain and even damage to the eardrum.”

Another common practice he advised against was sleeping close to one’s phone. Dr Sethi said: “Keeping the smartphone close to one’s eyes while sleeping can disrupt sleep patterns due to the blue light it emits, which suppresses melatonin production.”
Her third and final warning was for those who don’t wear sunscreen on cloudy days. She said UV rays can still penetrate clouds and cause skin damage, adding: “Not wearing sunscreen, especially during peak sun exposure hours, which is typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., increases the risk of sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer, regardless of the weather. So if you’re out in the sun during those hours, choose mineral, rather than chemical, sunscreen.”
