A SKINCARE expert has revealed the common mistakes that can cause visible signs of ageing.
Lisa Kavanagh said an easily overlooked step in nighttime beauty routines can lead to the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Kavanagh is the founder of Sphagnum De-Lux, a UK-based skincare brand that specializes in products containing peat.
She said there is a lot of misinformation about anti-aging online that could make your skin worse.
“While the appearance of wrinkles and lines is natural as we age, following the wrong types of skin care will lead to accelerated aging and damage to the skin,” she said.
Kavanagh revealed seven skincare mistakes to avoid to achieve a more youthful appearance.
SKIP THE SERUMS
She said it is “essential” to regularly use a cream or serum on the skin around the eyes.
Because the area is thinner than most other parts of the body, without proper care “wrinkles, bags and sagging” will appear.
LAYERED PRODUCTS
Kavanagh said the “rule of three” should be followed when it comes to skincare, as using too many products at once can have adverse effects.
These include chronic inflammation, which is a “major trigger” for skin aging.

“This can lead to a breakdown of collagen and elastin, which can cause wrinkles and sagging,” she explained.
SLEEPING WITH MAKEUP ON
Kavanagh said it’s common to accidentally forget to remove your makeup at night.
However, going to bed wearing products like mascara or concealer can damage your skin.
“Leaving it on can cause accelerated aging as it breaks down collagen and leads to fine lines and wrinkles,” she said.
LACK OF HYDRATION
Kavanagh revealed that there is one area of the body that is often overlooked when applying skincare products.
“Many people understand the importance of moisturizing their face, but they seem to forget how essential it is to apply it to the neck,” she said.
Using very hot water can be very drying to the skin, which can damage the skin barrier and lead to wrinkles and lines.

“Lack of moisture can create ‘neck rings’ that can cause sagging and horizontal lines.”
EXCESSIVE EXFOLIATION
Kavanagh said skin should only be exfoliated three times a week.
“It is healthy to exfoliate your skin, but doing so too often can destroy the skin barrier, which can lead to dryness and irritation, ultimately leading to accelerated aging,” she said.
Do not use sunscreen
Kavanagh warned that it is “vital” to use SPF when leaving the house, especially on the face and neck.
“Sun exposure can significantly age the skin and produce dark spots, which can cause premature aging,” she said.
WASHING WITH HOT WATER
Kavanagh revealed that skin can become “extremely dry” and damaged if “very hot water” is used when washing the face.
He said this would cause fine lines and wrinkles to appear.
“Make sure to use hot water only occasionally to help open pores; otherwise, use lukewarm water for daily cleansing,” she said.
