London is set to be hit by a heatwave, with temperatures set to rise to 25C today and 29C on Monday, according to the Met Office. It may seem like the perfect opportunity for picnics, barbecues and gardening, but you might be wondering how to get a good night’s sleep in the sweltering heat.
Luckily, an expert from mattress brand Levitex has shared three helpful tips on TikTok (@levitex) to help you get some rest during the heat. Interestingly, the mattress you sleep on can affect your temperature as can other factors such as clothing, sheets, and airflow in the room.
Her first tip may seem obvious, but many people forget to do it right before bed. She advised: “The first thing is to take a cold shower before bed, and keep the temperature low just before you get into the sheets.”

And he continued: “The second thing is not to lie on your back and much less on your stomach, since more heat will be absorbed between the mattress and your body. It takes up more surface area, so lying on your side would be the best option.”
The final piece of advice from the experts has to do with the mattress itself. “Lastly, guys, don’t buy memory foam. A) it absorbs body heat and b) because it’s as soft as a bowl of oatmeal, it’s much harder to move around and roll over. And then you’ll be tossing and turning all night long, which will increase your heart rate and make you feel awfully hot.”
So, next time you’re trying to sleep through the heat, make sure you follow these expert tips. A fan and an open window to create a cool breeze will also help, as will loose cotton clothing. Make sure you keep some water near your bed, too – there’s nothing worse than waking up dehydrated after a sweltering night.
