Fans have watched a Chinese Olympian’s heartbreaking reaction after his huge mistake cost his nation gold at the Paris Olympics.
China is never far from the top of the Olympic medal table, but on Monday it missed out on a chance to win gold in gymnastics.
China looked set to take first place in the men’s artistic all-around team final, but two costly mistakes by gymnast Su Weide cost them dearly and they had to settle for silver.
In the event, teams of four people compete in multiple different disciplines and each score counts towards the team total.
Su Weide made her mistakes during her horizontal bar routine, so her score dragged the rest of the team down.
The 24-year-old fell off the bar twice in quick succession during his routine, resulting in China being deducted two points for the double error.
China finished with a score of 259.062 and was edged out by Japan, who scored 259.594, to take the gold.
The United States took bronze, while Team Great Britain missed out on a podium spot in fourth place.
Fans on social media had a lot of sympathy for Su, but it wasn’t her double gaffe that caught their attention.
After returning to the side of the arena, a visibly upset Su sat away from his teammates and none of them came to console him.
“Poor guy, absolutely devastating for him,” wrote one fan, while another commented: “His teammates showed him so much support afterwards… NO!”
Other fans criticised Weide’s teammates, commenting “embarrassing reactions from his teammates there” and “you win as a team, you lose as a team, they should have supported him”.
Su Weide will have the opportunity to redeem himself in the coming days in the individual events.
