NBA Rumors: We explore seven universally praised offseason moves that could end up being huge mistakes.
The 2024 NBA offseason is by no means over, but it’s pretty safe to assume that the busiest part of the summer is behind us. With the NBA Draft, Free Agency, and even the NBA Summer League in the rearview mirror, it’s natural to start looking forward to the start of training camps (which are still roughly two months away).
But as the hottest days of the offseason approach, it’s also a good time to look back and honestly project some of the biggest moves of the summer. In this article, we’ll take a look at seven “universally” praised deals that have a high chance of turning out to be huge mistakes.
If it’s true that the Philadelphia 76ers signed Caleb Martin with the intention of starting him at power forward, I have my doubts about whether this is a move that will end up working out. In the right role, Martin could be a very valuable player for a contending team. However, in the wrong role, he could be viewed as a JAG, “just another guy.”
When he was at his peak with the Miami Heat, he was used as a sort of Swiss Army knife for the team. Last season, when they needed him as a full-time starting power forward, he struggled for consistency. As good a signing as Martin is, if the Sixers have the wrong role planned for him heading into the season, this is the kind of move that may not work out.
We’ll see how the Sixers intend to utilize Martin this season, but there’s at least a chance this move doesn’t end up playing out the way the front office perhaps hopes it will.
