Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge says NDA govt was formed by mistake, PM Modi has no mandate

Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said the coalition government at the Center was formed by mistake and could fall at any time.

In the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls, the BJP won a total of 240 seats, short of the majority mark of 272, and the party depended on its allies to form the government.

“NDA government was formed by mistake. Modi ji does not have the mandate. It is a minority government. This government can fall at any time. We would like it to continue. Let it be good for the country. We should work together to strengthen the country .But our Prime Minister has a habit of not letting things go well, but we will cooperate to strengthen the country…” Mallikarjun Kharge said.

Kharge’s jibe at Prime Minister Modi and the coalition government drew a swift response from his political rivals in Bihar.

While JDU reminded Kharge of the scores of prime ministers of Congress-led coalitions, RJD preferred to toe its line.

Former Bihar IPRD minister and JDU MLC Neeraj Kumar questioned Kharge’s intellect and asked him the scorecards of the Congress-led governments of PV Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh.

In the 1991 general elections, the Congress won a similar number of seats as the BJP won in 2024. When no party could win a majority, the Congress formed a minority government under the semi-retired Narasimha Rao. The Congress Party practically managed to form a government.

Rao quietly engineered a split into smaller parties and converted a minority Congress into a majority party within two years.

Kumar asked if Kharge was unaware of Congress’ legacy. “Congress is now deadlocked “99ka Chakkar”.

Meanwhile, RJD stood by its ally when the NDA’s guns were blazing. RJD spokesperson Ejaz Ahmad said, “Kharge is right! The popular mandate was against the Modi government. The voters did not accept it. Still, he came to power.”
