“Don’t use a manual toothbrush,” he said. “It is very common to scrub too much and brush too hard. This aggressive brushing will actually wear away the pretty white enamel layer and expose the yellow layer of dentin underneath.”

Dr. Surina also urged her viewers to avoid snacking, explaining that every time we consume food our mouth goes into an “acidic state.” “The more times you eat a day, the more they attack your teeth with acid,” she added. “This can erode the white enamel layer and expose the yellow dentin layer underneath.”

Finally, the dentist recommends always drinking soft drinks with a straw due to their high acidity. “If you use a straw, you limit contact between your teeth and the drink and will cause less enamel erosion,” she explains.
