Newcastle woman initially mistakes $1 million won in Saturday’s lottery for $1,000

A Newcastle woman has confessed she initially failed to look at all the digits and commas correctly when checking her Saturday lottery ticket and mistook her $1 million prize for just $1,000.

The Novocastrian had one of five division one winning entries in Lotto draw 4487 on Saturday 20 July 2024. Each division one winning entry pocketed $1,012,896.39.

“I checked my ticket last night!” the woman exclaimed as she spoke to a Lott official.

“At first I thought it was just $1,000; I didn’t look at all the commas.

“I had to call my sister because I couldn’t read it properly! Wow!

“The funny thing is that I don’t normally play Saturday Lotto, but I decided to do so a couple of weeks ago.

“I’m in shock. I can’t believe it. I’ve always dreamed of winning. This will change my life completely. Let’s put it that way!”

“I’ve probably only slept two hours! I keep feeling like I need to pinch myself!”

“My priority is to pay off the house and go from there, regardless of what the financial advisor tells me. I want to have a nest egg for the future.”

The woman’s marked winning ticket was purchased through The Lott app, the official home of Australian lotteries.

The winning numbers for Lotto draw 4487 on Saturday, July 20, 2024 were 31, 30, 23, 29, 17 and 25, while the complementary numbers were 6 and 14.

Across Australia, there were five division one winning entries in Saturday’s Lotto draw 4487 – three from Victoria and one each from New South Wales and Queensland.

The Lott’s Division 1 prize total has reached 231 so far in 2024, including 75 won by NSW Lotteries customers.

In 2023, Saturday Lotto created 176 millionaires across Australia.

During this time, there were 303 Saturday Lotto division one winners across Australia who collectively won more than $436 million.
