Cooper talks about “good times” and “mistakes”

Leicester City beat League One side Shrewsbury Town in their first competitive game under new manager Steve Cooper.

Goals from Stephy Mavididi and Kasey McAteer were enough to make it two wins from two pre-season games for the Foxes as the 2016 Premier League winners prepare for their return to the top flight.

Speaking to BBC Radio Leicester, Steve Cooper acknowledged there were some “good things” but expects more from his team: “We had some clear objectives for the game, in terms of how we wanted the team to play, some fitness gains and players in some different positions.

“There were certainly some good parts and some where we felt we needed to do a little better.

“I think the mistakes we made in the game were because the lads tried to play with our new ideas, so I don’t have any problem with that. It’s okay to make mistakes when they try to do what we’re implementing.”

The Welsh coach also explained why Jamie Vardy and Jakub Stolarczyk were unable to play: “Vards suffered a knock in the game against Villarreal. Unfortunately, he will miss this game, but fortunately he will not be out for long.”

“We hope he will be back with us for the Germany training camp, or even a little later.

“It’s very unfortunate news for Jakub. He had a very minor injury during training and it ended up being a very serious injury. He had to undergo ankle surgery and will be out for a long period of time.”
