If you ask the average wrestling fan what their favorite match of the year is, there’s a good chance most of them will point to the annual top-rope madness that is the Royal Rumble.
And while the 2024 versions of that stip certainly had their moments (Jordynne Grace’s explosive cameo and Punk/Rhodes’ finale were exceptional), they also highlighted a secret problem: ‘Papa H’ has a lot of work to do in the women’s division .
Outside of the names at the top of the card like Bayley, Becky Lynch and Bianca Belair, and those new talents who have been made to feel like the next big things, like Jade Cargill, the vast majority of the field found themselves with the unbearable sound of apathy when their soft songs boomed through the speakers.
No one gave a damn about Katana Chance, Kayden Carter, Ivy Nile, Alba Fyre and so many other talented performers in the 30-woman contest because Trips has spent much of the last year simply throwing them into heatless tag team contests and battle royals.
The fact that ‘The Game’ had actually taken the time to build a lot of interesting storylines further down the card and away from the main titles on the men’s side led to much less awkward arrivals in their match.
The company simply hasn’t put the same amount of effort and thought into topping the women’s midcard as the men’s, and that surely needs to change before Rumble 2025 arrives.
