On Tuesday night, Congressman-elect George Santos (R.N.Y.) made a brief appearance on the Fox News show. Tucker Carlson tonight in an attempt to better assess the consequences of a recent New York Times research into what appears to be his largely fictional personal and professional history.
“I think humans are flawed and we all make mistakes,” Santos insisted to former Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, who is guest hosting Carlson’s eponymous show while he is away. “I think we can all look in the mirror and admit that once in our lives we made a mistake. I have to admit it on national television for the whole country to see. And I have the courage to do it because I believe that to overcome this and move forward and to be an effective member of Congress, I have to face my mistakes, and I am facing them.
Among the “mistakes” Santos is accused of making are lies about where he went to college, his alleged employment at high-powered financial institutions, and his repeated claim that he is Jewish, all of which have been determined to be false.
“It really doesn’t sound like you’re taking this seriously,” Gabbard told Santos in one of the interview’s most heated exchanges. “You apologized, you said you had made mistakes, but you lied outright. A lie is not an embellishment on a resume.”
After insisting that his resume was merely “arguable” and not a simple fabrication, Santos justified his false biography – and in particular his shady finances and his disproven claims of employment at Goldman Sachs – by saying narration Gabbard that “I can sit down and explain to you what can be done in private equity, in capital introduction, through services to limited partners and general partners, and we can have this discussion that will go way over the heads of the American people, but That’s not what I campaigned for.”
“Wow,” Gabbard responded, apparently surprised.
