Dion Sanderson has apologized to Birmingham City fans after taking a step back to reflect on his mistakes from last season.
Sanderson, who was named Blues captain at the start of last season, has retired from social media since the club’s relegation from the Championship was confirmed. While his on-field form suffered following the departure of John Eustace in October, Sanderson struggled off the field in April when the club confirmed he had been charged with drink-driving.
The Blues have decided to strip Sanderson of the captaincy for their final three matches and it remains to be seen whether new coach Chris Davies will reinstate the 24-year-old. Sanderson is eager to right the wrongs of last season and has been working on his fitness with local non-league side Redditch United in preparation for the start of League One.
In a lengthy Instagram post, Sanderson said: “Hi Bluenoses, I haven’t been on social media for some time. I felt it was important for me to take a step back and reflect on the past few months.

“It has been difficult to face it as a player, captain and as a person. I want to apologize to everyone for the mistakes I have made on and off the field.
“Birmingham City is my home. It is a privilege to represent this football club and feel the love and support of the fans, from the moment I arrive at the stadium to the moment I leave the pitch.
“I’m looking forward to the season starting and I look forward to getting back to work with much more focus, hard work and resilience. I have no doubt that together we will overcome this setback and get the club back in the right direction.
“I hope to see you all very soon and, most importantly, thank you. Your support has been incredible. KRO.”
