Lauderhill (United States): Following Pakistan’s nervy victory over Ireland on Sunday, Men in Green captain Babar Azam lamented the mistakes his team made against arch-rivals India and co-hosts the United States in their previous Group A matches.
Babar, who was not in his best form throughout the tournament, played captain’s innings under pressure by staying till the end and finishing the game for Pakistan against the team led by Paul Stirling, who put up a strong fight while defending the target of 107 careers. . Babar played an anchor role and ensured that they did not fail again, scoring 32 off 34 balls in a chase that almost failed.
Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, the Pakistan captain said: “I think with bowling, the conditions suited our players. But in batting we made few mistakes in the matches against USA and India. When you lose wickets, The pressure is on you,”
“We couldn’t finish even games and as a team we weren’t good,” he admitted.
The Men in Green finished Group A in third place after losing their first two matches against India and the United States before beating Canada and Ireland. However, Babar was happy that his team ended the tournament on a positive note.
“Yes, we finished well. We took early wickets with the ball. But with the bat, we didn’t finish well. We lost consecutive wickets, but in the end we got over the line.”
The right-handed batsman also stated that Pakistan will have to regroup quickly, although he did not respond with a definitive answer on his future as captain.
“Let’s see what the team needs, I will accept it. We have a good group of players, we have to go home, talk and see where we are missing and then come back,” he added.
“We have not played the type of cricket that our country demands, we have some areas to improve. It is difficult (the result),” said Afridi, who was named ‘Man of the Match’ for his exceptional bowling performance (3/22) and 13 crucial runs off five balls.
