‘We made mistakes while batting against India and USA,’ admits Babar Azam

NEW DELHI: Pakistan captain Babar Azam expressed regret over the mistakes made by his team in their previous Group A matches against India and the United States. Despite claiming a consolatory three-wicket victory over Ireland in Lauderhill, the former champions were eliminated from the T20 World Cup.

Babar himself played a crucial role in Pakistan’s successful chase of 107 runs against Ireland, remaining unbeaten on 32. However, the chase was far from easy, and Pakistan almost blew the chance to secure victory.

“I think in the bowling the conditions were right for our players. But in batting we made few mistakes in the matches against USA and India. When you lose wickets, the pressure is on you,” Babar was quoted as saying by PTI. at the post-match presentation ceremony.

“We couldn’t finish even games and as a team we weren’t good,” he admitted.

Pakistan had a difficult start in Group A, suffering defeats against India and the United States in their first two matches. However, they managed to bounce back by picking up wins against Canada and Ireland.

Despite the early setbacks, Babar expressed his satisfaction with his team’s performance, particularly their ability to conclude the tournament on a positive note with a victory.

“Yes, we finished well. We took early wickets with the ball. But with the bat, we didn’t finish well. We lost consecutive wickets, but in the end we got over the line.”

Babar acknowledged that Pakistan needs to recover quickly from this setback. However, he remained unsure of his future as team captain and gave no clear indication of his plans.

“Let’s see what the team needs, I will accept it. We have a good group of players, we have to go home, talk and see where we are missing and then come back,” he added.

Fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi, who received the player of the match award, admitted that throughout the tournament, the team failed to display the proper style of cricket expected of them.

“We have not played the type of cricket that our country demands, we have some areas to improve. It is difficult (the result),” Afridi said.

Ireland captain Paul Stirling admitted the team struggled to find the optimal combination of players throughout the tournament.

“It’s about getting that balance right. T20… we probably won’t have it this time. It’s been a tough couple of weeks. We’ll come back, regroup and see if we can come back stronger,” he said.
