It was a horror moment to forget for Jeremy Doku after his attempted skill deep in Belgium’s half resulted in Slovakia scoring a stunning opening goal in Monday’s Euro 2024 clash.
The Manchester City star has become a regular starter for the Belgian team but was at fault when he made a woeful pass across the box to gift Slovakia an easy goal against the run of play in the 7th minute.
Eager for the ball, Doku dropped back for a throw-in near the corner flag and received possession before stopping to make his next move as the opposing attackers pressed.
He finally opted to drag the ball to the side in an attempt to form an angle and passed with a weak effort into the center of the Belgian area.
Doku’s pass was easily intercepted as defenders were caught off guard and the next shot was initially saved by Koen Casteels before Ivan Schranz tapped in the rebound from close range.
The defensive mistake was a rare lapse in concentration from the 22-year-old who has starred under Pep Guardiola since joining the Premier League champions last year.
The misjudged pass was a difficult moment for Doku, who had initially started the match brightly demonstrating his usual attacking style as he raced down the flank.
Critics were quick to attack Doku’s bug online, with one post on “Unplayable but very naive.”
Another equally comical comment added: ‘Doku attends… Slovakia. What was that….’
Rival Man City fans also joined in by highlighting the Belgian’s mistake, with one Man United fan account adding: “Doku created Solvakia’s goal.”
Another social media post commented: “What an assist from Doku, a world class player.”
