During the time of DC Extended Universe, Warner Bros. announced several projects that never saw the light of day despite generating excitement among fans. Now DC enters a new era with James Gunn and Peter Safran restarting their slate of projects in development. While there was excitement to see what awaits the new DCU, some are still upset because projects like Ben Affleck’s the batmana suitable Iron Man continuation, Wonder Woman3, At night, and others will no longer see the light under the new management.
Gunn has said on numerous occasions that they have several years of stories they hope to tell in the DCU and so far fans only know what will happen in Chapter I: Gods and Monsters. The New Gods are part of Jack Kirby’s Fourth World saga that came to DC Comics in the 1970s and features characters such as Orion, mister miracle, great fence, Kind granny, and more. The stories deal with intergalactic conflict on the opposing planets of Apokolips and New Genesis. While the New Gods characters may not be household names, neither were the Guardians of the Galaxy before Gunn took over. Not to mention, they offer a clean slate for the general audience who are already very familiar with the members of the Justice League.
New Gods characters have appeared in animation over the years and an animated film by hellish boy Creator Mike Mignola was also working at one point. However, New Gods remains one of the few DC properties waiting for a live-action adaptation to the big screen with untapped potential. Ava DuVerrnay’s participation with new gods It wasn’t the only exciting prospect about the planned DCEU movie. It was finally announced that DC Comics tom king He also participated as a writer at DuVernay. King is a big name in comics and he presented the award mister miracle run that has revitalized interest in the New Gods property among comic book fans.
King no longer writes a new gods movie as far as we know, but he’s now part of the DCU writers room with Lanterns being a project that is helping to bring to production. With King now involved in the genesis of the DCU, it’s hard to imagine him not looking to resurrect his live-action New Gods in some capacity after working on the previous project and his close connection to the source material.

New Gods has a lot of characters and lore that can make it the game of Thrones type of series that every streamer pursues if it doesn’t hit the big screen first. There’s also one major DC character that the series could introduce for future stories and easily tie into the overall DCU story: Darkseid.
Darkseid is one of the most menacing villains in all of comics and has yet to receive his comeuppance in live action beyond the tease in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. The DCU could easily go in another direction under Gunn with a darker choice as the universe’s overall big bad, but it may be too hard to ignore Darkseid’s potential on the big screen. TO new gods A series or movie may make Darkseid the main villain of the DCU before fighting the Justice League, similar to what Gunn does. The DCU has no shortage of interesting projects that are in the early stages of development, and they will all play into Gunn and Safran’s plans for their first chapter. Since the first chapter deals with gods and monsters, it’s hard to imagine Gunn leaving out some of the most notable ones from the DC Comics canon. If there’s one thing the DCEU deserves credit for, it’s that it finally gave comic book fans an expanded DC universe with the long-awaited big screen debuts of heroes like Aquaman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and many others.
Based on Gunn’s sensibility and the current DCU roadmap released so far, DC Studios It will continue to take advantage of every corner of the great story it can bring to animation and live action. New Gods in particular is a comics property unknown to the mainstream and ripe for exposure. Audiences are more open than ever to new superhero franchises, making it the perfect time for DC Studios to involve the New Gods in their big plans.
