A travel expert has said tragic health guru Michael Mosley made some serious mistakes when he embarked on his fatal jaunt to a Greek island. The 67-year-old nutrition and wellness doctor collapsed and died of natural causes on the day he disappeared on the Greek island of Symi, according to police.
His body was found on Sunday in a rocky area near Agia Marina beach, after he was reported missing on Wednesday. Greek police spokesperson Konstantia Dimoglidou told the BBC that an initial post-mortem examination was carried out, confirming that there were no injuries on her body.
Speaking on GB News, travel expert Simon Calder said the sad episode highlights the dangers of doing strenuous activities abroad and said Dr Mosley had made three mistakes: leaving his phone behind, not drinking enough water and walking alone. Presenter Nana Akua said: “This highlights the dangers. If you find yourself in an unfamiliar place, these are the things you should make sure you have with you. because it really bothered me to hear it and I thought I wished he had taken a cell phone. What are the main things you need to make sure of, especially with that kind of heat you’re carrying around?
Mr Calder responded: “Can I just say that I am absolutely in tune with how you felt and the decision you made could be considered irresponsible and of course in hindsight we can all look back and say yes. of course. He should have had his phone with him. Yes, he should have made sure he had plenty of water. And ideally, he should have been hiking with someone else since, as his wife says, he was doing a really challenging hike.
“However, he was the type of person who was very, very good at understanding the risks and knowing the problems he could possibly face. And I can see that she thought ‘It’s a beautiful day.’ Yes, he’s hot, but he’s confident in his own abilities because he’s proven time and time again that he’s a great survivor, so I can see that he would get going like that, I think all of us, looking at the terrain, there’s an extreme . heat that is currently affecting Symi and other parts of the eastern Mediterranean.
“I would think, now I would think again and consider: Am I adequately equipped? Do I have everything I need in case I fall or feel weak or whatever? But ultimately, it is a beautiful island. It was a good day. She felt that she was not far from safety. It was just, I’m very sorry to say, it was a misadventure. Something went tragically wrong. And it has ended with the loss of a great husband, a great father and a great communicator who helped us all improve our health.”
Dimoglidou told the BBC that the position of his body means Dr Mosley died of natural causes. He also said toxicology and histology reports will be done.
Footage allegedly found at a beach bar in Agia Marina shows what appears to be the TV doctor descending a rocky slope near a fence before disappearing from sight. Calypso Haggett, CEO of The Fast 800 weight loss program, an intermittent fasting diet popularized by Mosley, said he was a “bright light to the entire team” and that his “incredible legacy” will “drive a continued movement for a better health”. .
The statement from the late broadcaster’s business partner also said: “He and his work motivated us every day and we continue to be so inspired by his energy, passion, humor, knowledge and kindness. He was a great communicator and had a unique ability to convey complex messages in a simple and easy to understand way that encouraged many people to make positive changes in their lives. I know this is how he will be remembered.
“I had the great privilege of knowing Michael both professionally and personally. He truly was one of a kind and will be greatly missed by all.”
