Jos Buttler has vowed to learn from his “mistakes” after returning home from England’s calamitous World Cup full of “sadness and frustration”.
Pre-tournament predictions that the defending champions would make a strong run in India went out the window as England faltered alarmingly, losing six of their first seven matches, often by huge margins.
Beating Holland and Pakistan to book a place in the 2025 Champions Trophy could not mask a hugely disappointing campaign and Buttler has accepted responsibility for his own failings.
Apart from averaging a disappointing 15.33 with the bat, passing 30 just once in nine innings, the England captain’s decision-making, especially in bowling, and tactics came under the microscope.
Buttler wrote on Instagram on Tuesday: “Now back home and very much reflecting on an incredibly disappointing World Cup campaign.
“The last eight weeks could not have gone less according to plan and the predominant emotions of sadness and frustration still dominate my feelings.
“In the end, we performed far below our capabilities and I more so than anyone else.
“I’ll let this be a great lesson from the mistakes I made and a motivation in everything I do in the future.”
England’s 15-man squad in India included 11 players aged 30 or over and many of them have been omitted from the ODI leg of next month’s tour to the West Indies amid an expected restart.
Director of cricket Rob Key has backed Buttler and head coach Matthew Mott, the pair who orchestrated England’s T20 World Cup triumph in Australia just 12 months ago.
Buttler has already stated his intention to oversee the rebuild and will use what has happened in recent weeks as fuel for the fire going forward.
He added: “It won’t be long before the feelings of enthusiasm and determination return and drive me forward every day.”
