Spanish tourists fined 600 euros for little-known taxi error

Tourists are urged not to make a common mistake when taking a taxi in Spain.

In Spain, taxis and private car rental companies are required to be registered. However, there is a little-known regulation that could lead to fines for tourists.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns that the use of taxi services without a license can result in a fine of up to 600 euros. Those who need taxi services in Spain should book in advance instead of taking one on the spot. This applies to everyone, whether you need a taxi to and from the airport or to get around the area you are staying, reports the Liverpool Echo.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says on its website: “Use only official registered or licensed taxis, or reputable transport companies that you recognise. Licensing rules differ across Spain and in certain cities advance booking is required.

“Passengers caught using taxi services without a license are subject to fines of up to 600 euros. Make sure you book your taxi or airport transfer through an authorized company.”

GoGuides states that taxis in Spain are licensed and equipped with clearly visible taximeters. However, some drivers may request a flat rate (often an inflated amount) claiming that their taximeter is not working. Others could take a longer route to increase the overall rate.

To avoid this, they say: “Check that the taximeter is on before getting into the taxi. If the driver claims it’s not working, politely decline and find another taxi. You can call your hotel to get an estimated cost of the trip to avoid being overcharged.”
