Shehu Sani, a former senator from Kaduna, has called on President Bola Tinubu to learn from the past and avoid repeating the mistakes of his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari. Sani specifically highlighted concerns related to the cabinet reshuffle.
Following Buhari’s tenure, Tinubu officially assumed office on May 29, 2023.
Sani, known for his activism, criticised Buhari’s eight-year rule, citing nepotism, incompetence and governance failures.
As a guest on Sunday’s edition of Channels Television’s Politics Today, he emphasized that ministers remained in office during both terms without reshuffles or dismissals, even when their performance was poor.
Sani highlighted the retention of service chiefs despite their failures, which he felt hampered the careers of other capable officers.
The activist urged Tinubu to prioritise competence in appointing officials to move the country forward.
He said: “I will advise President Tinubu to be careful not to make the mistakes of President Buhari, and I believe he has the experience to understand this. Under President Buhari, there are ministers who were appointed in office for the entire eight years
“They were with him during the first and second terms, and there was no cabinet reshuffle or dismissal. Even if there is a dismissal, it takes three to four months to replace a minister. That was how the country was governed. Under Buhari, we have seen nepotism at its peak, when people were appointed to public positions and left behind even if they did nothing.”
Recently, the president’s cabinet faced severe criticism for its performance amid the current economic challenges.
It is noteworthy that the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation has been without a minister since the suspension of Betta Edu on January 8, 2024.
