We’re sharing our top Disney Genie+ tips while you’re at Disney World, including mistakes to avoid when using the paid line-skipping service.
In 2021, Disney made a big change. They officially revealed that FastPass+ was gone and would instead be replaced by Disney Genie+. This way to skip the line requires a same-day purchase, and the price changes depending on the date and which park you visit. And in July 2024, it will change again when the service changes its name. Lightning Lane Multi Pass will go into effect on July 24, 2024, and individual attraction selections will be renamed Single Lightning Lanes.
Along with the new names, both will soon be available up to seven days in advance for Disney Resort hotel guests (or three days in advance for everyone else). The service will work a bit like FastPass+ (though it will still be a paid service) in that it will allow you to make three selections in advance, one from Group One and two from Group Two.
While the service can save you time from having to wait in lines at the park, it can also be a little confusing for first-time visitors (to make it easier for you, we’re breaking it ALL down here!). So before you head to the parks for your first ride with Lightning Lane Multi Pass, we’re sharing our top tips and mistakes to avoid when using the service.
Forget a portable battery
There are no two ways about it: to use Disney Genie+ (or Lightning Lane Multi Pass) you’ll need to be on your phone. often within the parks. Whether you’re signing up for a virtual queue, choosing new Lightning lanes, or placing mobile orders, you’ll want to plan accordingly to be on your phone throughout the day. Because of that, it’s a good idea to bring a portable charger. critical to ensure your phone’s battery lasts all day.
You can either pack your own or use FuelRod, which you’ll find located throughout the park. FuelRod is a quick and easy system, with kiosks at all four theme parks. The way it works is that you can pay an initial cost of $30 and then you’ll be able to swap out the battery at any time during the day for no additional charge.
Not knowing how the “rules” of Disney Lightning Lanes work
There was a LOT to learn about Disney Genie+ and now, starting July 24, all those rules are changing. again.
Here’s what you need to know.
- Lightning Lane Multi Pass replaces Disney Genie+
- It will be available up to seven days in advance to reserve a theme park when staying at a Disney World Resort hotel (or three days for others) for the entire duration of your trip (up to fourteen days).
- You can make up to three selections in advance (one from Group One, two from Group Two; more on that in a minute).
- It will continue to be a paid service, but you will now be able to purchase it in advance of your trip.
- Individual Lightning Lanes will replace individual ride selections
- It will work in a similar way and will allow you to purchase a Lightning Lane for a single attraction.
- Up to two individual Lightning lanes can be purchased
- You’ll be available up to seven days in advance to reserve a theme park when staying at a Disney World Resort hotel (or three days for others) for the entire duration of your trip (up to fourteen days).
Choosing the WRONG Attractions
While there are some exceptions, most attractions are available by purchasing the Lightning Lane Multi Pass. Unlike Disney Genie+, however, when Lightning Lane Multi Pass debuts, it will separate rides into “groups” for advance purchase. Like FastPass+, you can make one Group One selection in advance (the most popular attractions) and two from Group Two. Wondering what those groups are? They will be available at all parks except Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

While the system will change, as will Disney Genie+, you’ll still want to know. which rides to prioritize over others. This may depend on the needs of your groups rather than which attractions are the most “popular.” For example, at EPCOT, if you are traveling with younger children, Frozen Ever After or Remy Ratatouille Adventure will likely be the attractions you want to prioritize from Group One.
This new system is an improvement on Disney Genie+, which bundled all of these attractions together. As a result, the availability of the most popular attractions used to sell out quickly.
Buy Disney Lightning Lanes when you don’t need them
While it can save a tremendous amount of time in your day by allowing you to skip the usual line, one of our top tips for Disney Lightning Lanes is that they’re not always necessary. During busier times of the year such as spring break, holidays, runDisney marathon weekends or other particularly busy days can save you from having to wait in lines for hours. ButDuring slower times of the year, you may be paying to skip an already short regular line.
However, if the thought of longer wait times makes you uncomfortable, or you are traveling with young children who can’t handle the wait time, the service could be worth the cost. It can depend entirely on several factors: the time of year, the park, and your group’s personal preferences.
