I’m a makeup artist: 3 beauty mistakes that age you, including a concealer trick that adds years to your face

CREATING a flawless makeup look without professional help is no easy task, especially if we are trying to cover blemishes and wrinkles.

While many of us try to make ourselves look younger, the way we apply our makeup could actually have the opposite effect and make us look even older.

From eyeshadow that’s too bright to the wrong concealer color, some looks can make our face look decades older.

Luckily, one expert has revealed the simple mistakes that are instantly ageing you and how to fix them to achieve a more youthful appearance.

Makeup artist Wayne Goss explains there are three specific beauty mistakes that can add up over the years.

Goss, who runs her own cosmetics site, often shares her tips with her four million YouTube followers.

He says: “Most of us will use makeup to enhance our appearance or even to cover up some of the wrinkles we have developed over the years.

“However, due to a few mistakes, the makeup we use could actually have the opposite effect and potentially add not just one or two, but up to ten years to our face.”

Metallic eyeshadow

While this was one of the major trends of the 90s, it should no longer be the dominant style, experts say.

As we age, our skin can change, so even if it looked good 20-30 years ago, it no longer does.

Goss says: “Avoid metallic eyeshadows and instead opt for a matte one. Matte usually works best because it doesn’t draw attention to creased areas or wrinkles.

“Powder is also easier to apply over creams, especially since it’s easier to blend with a good quality brush.

Choosing the color of the concealer

Goss has revealed a mistake most people make when using concealer that actually adds years to their face.

She stressed that it is important to choose the right colour and not to be “too light” in specific areas.

He explains: “Generally speaking, people can use too light a concealer around the eyes, which can add years to the face, so it’s really important to get the colour that suits your skin tone.

“It’s always recommended to use cream concealer over liquid concealer, and I highly recommend applying a little on the inner corner of the eye as it’s the only part of the eye that doesn’t crease.”

Primers

When we are young, we don’t really think that staying hydrated will affect our makeup.

But as we age our skin becomes drier and therefore hydration becomes more important.

While this may mean drinking more water, using specific hydrating ingredients on your skin can also work well as they are applied directly to your skin.

Goss advises: “As we age, our skin will naturally become drier, which is why hydrating ingredients are so important as we get older.

“Next time you’re shopping for makeup and skincare products, look for makeup with ingredients like hyaluronic acid to ensure your products keep your skin hydrated.

“Before you start applying anything to your face, make sure you’ve applied a strong moisturizer to ensure your skin stays hydrated.

“Use a good primer before you start applying your makeup to ensure it acts as a barrier between your skin and your makeup and that your makeup stays in the right places all day, rather than just in fine lines.”

WARNING ABOUT FACIAL WIPES

Facial wipes are a cheap and easy way to remove makeup from your skin.

But one skincare expert has warned they could actually damage your face.

Nicola Russell, who runs her own Skin Geek clinic in Falkirk, explains that many people use wipes as a cleanser when they should really only be used for makeup removal.

Nicola said: “Firstly, they are designed to break down makeup, they are not actually designed to cleanse the skin.

“This is where many people go wrong: they use makeup remover wipes as a substitute for cleansers.

“Wipes tend to have a lot more preservatives than your average cleanser, so the packaging keeps the wipes bacteria-free.

“This can irritate many people and disrupt the natural protective barrier we have on our skin.”

Nicola, who counts Gemma Collins, Amy Macdonald and Chloe Sims among her clients, reveals that the best way to use face wipes is to remove makeup first and then use a good quality cleanser as a second cleanse.

If you don’t do a second cleanse, the wipes could cause premature aging around your eyes and even some irritation and dryness.
