Wednesday, July 3, 2024 – A Ghanaian member of parliament has warned his colleagues against “passing bad laws” after Kenyans stormed parliament during anti-tax protests that swept across the country.
At least 39 people have been killed and 361 injured in recent anti-government protests in Kenya as activists continue a new round of protests this week.
The figure, announced Monday by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), is nearly double the figure previously released by the government for those who died while demonstrating against a series of unpopular tax increases that have now been withdrawn.
The Ghanaian lawmaker, speaking to his colleagues, warned that they should not allow such a scenario to happen in Ghana.
“The Kenyan public is attacking Members of Parliament for passing bad laws. Mr. Speaker, this is a serious matter. I saw fellow Members of Parliament beaten to death,” he said on Tuesday, July 3.
“Mr. President, please advise us how to pass good laws to prevent the public from defeating us. We should be worried. This is no laughing matter. This is no joke.”
