JAKARTA – Four Argentine referees have been sent home by UEFA for making mistakes in the final Group A match between Scotland vs Hungary on June 23, 2024 local time.
In detail, the referees who were expelled by UEFA were a main referee, two assistant referees and a VAR referee.
UEFA’s decision was based on the waiver of Scottish penalty claims by both the main referee and the VAR.
Facundo Tello’s head referee infuriated Scotland manager Steve Clarke when he ignored Willi Orban’s foul on Stuart Armstrong.
“He’s from Argentina. Why did I ask him? He probably didn’t speak the language. I don’t know.”
“Why is he here? Why isn’t there a European referee?” Steve Clarke told The Sun.
In fact, UEFA detected another incident in the penalty area that was overlooked by the referees in the Scotland vs Hungary match.
The incident in question is the elbow of Scottish player Grant Hanley on Endre Botka which was interpreted as a penalty for Hungary.
In addition to Tello, UEFA also gave two assistant referees, Gabriel Chade and Ezequiel Brailovsky, a break for the error.
Meanwhile, VAR referee Alejandro Hernandez has opted to resign. UEFA believes he failed to intervene in two incidents in the penalty area during that match.
However, there is speculation that Tello will be appointed as the fourth official in the knockout stages in an attempt to maintain a reciprocal agreement between UEFA and Conmebol.
The agreement between UEFA and Conmebol has included Maurizio Mariani of Italy in the 2024 Copa América, where he was the referee for the United States vs Bolivia match.
However, Tello appears to have to pay a price for what UEFA considers a huge mistake.
UEFA has so far decided to give six of the 19 referees on duty at Euro 2024 a rest.
