A plumber explains how a common bathroom mistake causes mold growth

A plumbing expert warns that by not properly storing towels in our bathrooms, we could be creating the perfect conditions for mold to thrive – and fixing it could cost us hundreds of dollars.

No matter how meticulous you are about keeping your bathroom spotless, it’s not uncommon for mold to appear on the walls and ceilings.

This is often due to a warm, humid environment or insufficient ventilation. Mold can pose a serious health risk if exposed to it for long periods of time. In addition, major mold problems can be quite costly to fix if professional help is needed.

However, homeowners have been warned that one simple change could help eradicate mould in the bathroom – and it all comes down to towel storage. Peter Clayton, from Trade Plumbing, urges homeowners to store wet towels properly in the bathroom or face a potential £300 bill to fix a mould problem.

Improperly stored damp towels can increase the humidity in the bathroom, leading to unpleasant odours, harmful bacteria and ultimately mould growth. The expert points out that the common practice of stacking damp towels and leaving them to dry in unventilated areas is a major contributor to mould growth.

Instead, she recommends storing towels in a ventilated area, spread out on towel racks to prevent moisture from building up and causing mold. Wet towels hung or stacked together impede airflow, preventing them from drying and releasing excess moisture into the air, the Express reports.

Peter explains that without proper ventilation, persistent dampness in the bathroom can lead to mould growth, which could cost up to £300 to remove professionally. Mould is not only unsightly, but it also poses a potential health risk. Exposure to mould can lead to respiratory illnesses and infections, and can aggravate existing conditions such as asthma.

Peter said: “Mold is a major problem in the home and incorrect storage of towels plays a major role in its formation. Spending a couple of minutes a day storing them correctly can create a safer and cleaner environment, and will keep your towels in tip-top condition.”
