FASHION fans have revealed a washing mistake many people make that could be doing more harm than good to their jeans.
They shared a trick for cleaning the freezer that will make bad odors disappear and revitalize your pants.
Almost everyone has some denim, but not everyone knows how to care for it.
Washing and maintaining it can be difficult, especially when it has added embellishments and design details.
Gap experts have shared five fashion tips for washing and protecting your denim.
Don’t overdo it
First, make sure you don’t overwash your denim.
The professionals said denim should only be washed every ten wears and that excessive washing can “damage embellishments like sequins and beads.”
They recommended washing denim garments with these details only when the garment is “really dirty.”
Most of the time, spot treatments will work.
Then you can hang it on a clothesline or outside to dry and give it a little “boost”.
Gap experts also shared a tip for “freshening up.”
“We endorse the trick of storing jeans in the freezer to kill any bacteria and eliminate any odor,” they said.
HAND WASH IF AVAILABLE
As a follow-up, hand washing is the best cleaning option to protect both the color and overall life, as well as any loose embellishments.
In particular, experts said that hand washing in cold water helps “prevent damage to adhesives and can reduce the chances of shrinkage.”
“The process is as simple as soaking your garment in cold water with detergent, but keeping the soaking time to a minimum to avoid damaging the beads and embellishments,” they explained.
If there is a specific stain to be removed, they recommended gently massaging the area and avoiding “scrubbing” motions.
CONSTANT CLOSURE
Next, always close zippers when washing denim to prevent snagging and damage.
However, experts point out that the rules for more delicate fabrics are slightly different.
“Zippers should be closed, but buttons should remain open to avoid causing potential stress on delicate fabrics,” they explained.
This could cause buttons to loosen or elastic loop buttonholes to pull away from the fabric.
Cleaning tips and tricks
Here are some tips to help you next time you clean your house:
FALSEHOOD ON THE FABRIC
When selecting your cleaning agents, Gap experts suggested avoiding fabric softener.
They said it can change the texture of denim and damage the surface of velvet and satin.
They especially warn you not to add it to the wash if you’re washing custom-made pieces.
FALL TIP
Experts advise against using a dryer because it can cause loss of shape and other problems.
“The fast spin cycle of a dryer simply causes the embellishments to become loose and damaged, and the heat can cause shrinkage and fading,” they added.
The “best method” is to lay the denim flat or let it air dry.
One “top tip” they suggest is to pin or roll your jeans at the bottom of each leg.
This will cause the water to run down to your waist, so it dries faster and reduces wrinkles.
