While the Baltimore Orioles would love to make a major move to improve their odds of winning the World Series at the MLB trade deadline, they know it will cost them a high price to acquire a star.
In recent weeks, they have been linked to big names like Garrett Crochet and Tarik Skubal. Both players would be elite additions, but they wouldn’t come cheap.
Talent acquisition should certainly be a goal for the Orioles. They are a top-tier World Series contender right now and should make a go of it, especially if the player they acquire has control over his future contract.
That said, Baltimore must avoid making a huge mistake before the trade deadline.
Some rumors are circulating and some trade ideas include No. 1 prospect Jackson Holliday. While getting a proven star would help the Orioles compete for a championship, they can’t afford to completely mortgage their young talent.
Holliday remains a potential superstar in the future. Keeping him and finding a way to help him reach his full potential and reach the big leagues would be a smart move.
Earlier this season, Holliday was promoted and played in 10 games for Baltimore. He struggled mightily and ended up being sent back to the minors. In his 10 appearances, he hit .059/.111/.059 and had just one RBI.
That performance disheartened many Holliday fans. Despite the tough debut in the majors, Holliday is only 20 years old and deserves patience.
At the Triple-A level in the minor leagues, the young second baseman has been putting up good numbers. He has played in 64 games, hitting .273/.442/.471, along with eight home runs and 31 RBIs.
Before his poor performance in the majors earlier this season, everyone viewed him as a budding superstar. Nothing has changed, save for a 10-game skid. There is absolutely no need to panic.
All told, Holliday should be untouchable in trade talks. Trading him now would be a huge mistake. He still has the superstar potential that has made him the No. 1 prospect in the minor league system.
The Orioles are expected to be aggressive at the trade deadline. They should try to acquire a star pitcher like Crochet or Skubal if they can, but they shouldn’t be willing to let Holliday go to make that happen.
