Flexion exercises
Investing in your health is always money well spent, and one way to do that is by joining a gym. But between lunges and squats, we can make costly mistakes at the gym that end up emptying our wallets.
From not shopping around for the best membership to not taking advantage of all of your gym’s amenities, here are 10 costly mistakes to avoid as you embark on your fitness journey.
1. Make impulse purchases
If you’re like me, it’s hard to ignore the trendy gym clothing and accessories on display. Who doesn’t love a good sweatshirt or water bottle? However, the products you see in gyms (even basic things like supplements and protein bars) are often priced way up. Instead, opt for thrift stores or online retailers where you can get the same products for less money.
2. Not taking advantage of the gym’s amenities
Overlooking the full range of services offered by the gym is like leaving money on the table. Not using some of their amenities, such as saunas, showers and steam rooms, means missing out on the added value you are already paying for with your membership. Why not maximise your investment and treat yourself to the full package? You can improve both your physical and mental wellbeing and get the most out of your money.
3. Not comparing prices to find the best membership
If you don’t shop around to find the best gym membership, you could miss out on savings and opportunities. If you settle for the first option that comes your way, you risk missing out on better deals or promotions that could reduce your expenses in the long run.
For example, choosing between a contract and a monthly subscription depends on how consistently you work out: committing to a contract can be more cost-effective if you know you’ll be going to the gym regularly, while opting for a monthly subscription can offer you more freedom and flexibility if you need to cancel (or if you don’t want to get locked into a contract). Either way, taking the time to compare prices, facilities, and contract terms allows you to make an informed decision and save money in the long run.
4. Give up free trials
Many gyms offer free trials that can provide insight into the facilities, classes, and equipment available, allowing you to assess whether becoming a member is worth the investment and commitment. If you overlook free trials, you risk paying for a membership that doesn’t align with your fitness goals or preferences, leaving your wallet feeling the weight of lost savings.

5. Skipping classes or personal coaching
Some gyms offer customized workout routines or connect you with your own personal trainer (personal training can cost extra, but that’s not always the case, so don’t be afraid to ask). These classes or training sessions can provide additional guidance and motivation, making them a valuable part of your membership that you’re already paying for.

6. Forgetting to disinfect the equipment
Forgetting to disinfect gym equipment before using it can lead to hygiene issues, such as infections, skin conditions, and germs. Avoid unnecessary (and potentially costly) medical bills by thoroughly cleaning each machine with disinfectant wipes before and after use. Be sure to pay close attention to areas that may harbor the most germs, such as handles and screens.
7. Skipping warm-ups and cool-downs
If you’re thinking, “I don’t need to stretch,” think again. Neglecting warm-up and cool-down routines may save you time, but it can increase your risk of muscle strains, pulled hamstrings, or other injuries. These setbacks can lead to costly physical therapy sessions, medical bills, or missed training days that can end up costing you more time and money.
8. Overdoing it with supplements
Buying excess or unnecessary supplements, such as protein shakes and powders, without proper guidance can drain your wallet faster than you think. To avoid spending money on things you don’t need, consult with a professional to determine your specific needs and long-term goals.

9. Do not use free training apps or online resources
Instead of investing in expensive fitness equipment or specialized training programs, explore the wealth of workout apps and online resources available. Many apps, like the Nike Training Workout App and Train Fitness, offer free or affordable services that include workout routines, nutritional guidance, and tracking features, allowing you to save money and stay on track with your fitness goals.
10. Not strategically planning your gym visits
Taking advantage of off-peak hours or discounted membership rates during specific times can result in surprising savings. Some gyms offer lower rates for early morning or late evening sessions, and tailoring your schedule to fit these times can help you save money without compromising your workout routine. (Plus, the early bird catches the worm, right?)
