The Natterjack Irish Whiskey Mistake

Natterjack Irish Whiskey has introduced The Mistake, an innovative whiskey that combines Irish and American aging techniques.

The 46% ABV whiskey is the result of what was accidentally left in 46 of the producer’s virgin American oak casks for an extra year, the company says. The brand traditionally finishes its Irish whiskey for a year, it notes.

“It was a very happy accident,” Aidan Mehigan, founder and CEO of Natterjack Irish Whiskey, said in a statement. “After discovering the barrels, we opened one of them and it burst with hickory barbecue and toasted nut aromas. At first taste, we immediately realized it had double the flavor and extract, and a powerful oak. That’s when we knew we had something special.”

The Mistake is first aged in bourbon barrels for three and a half years. The liquid is then finished aging in a virgin American oak barrel for two years using a char level of four, the company says.

On the nose, The Mistake gives off aromas of hickory barbecue and toasted nuts, followed by burnt cinnamon and scorched orange peel, the company says. Sweet almond then gives way to leather and grain, with a vanilla flavor on the front palate giving way to a burst of anise and licorice, it notes. The powerful oak is enhanced by warm molasses, toffee and a hint of granny smith apple, it adds.

The Mistake, which comes in three different bottle label designs, is available at select Total Wine & More stores and other fine wine and spirits retailers nationwide for a suggested retail price of $58.99 per bottle. A limited quantity is also available for purchase online by visiting the company’s website.
