Republicans may be starting to question their party’s choice for vice president.
Much of Donald TrumpTrump’s presidential campaign, including the decision to choose Ohio Sen. JD Vance as his running mate, was structured around attacks on the president. Joe BidenBut then Biden announced on Sunday that he was withdrawing from the presidential race altogether.
Trump campaign officials acknowledged that Trump selected the inexperienced Vance, loaded with all his techno-authoritarian ideas, to boost support among his own base, not to extend a hand to undecided voters, according to The Atlantic. Vance was a symbol of the Trump team’s confidence that they would win in 2024. On Sunday, that confidence appears to be waning.
“The most striking thing I heard yesterday from Trump allies was doubt about JD Vance, a pick they acknowledged was born out of hubris, aimed at increasing margins with the base in a landslide victory rather than persuading undecided voters in a close election.” Atlantic Editor Tim Alberta, who wrote the article about Trump’s panic campaign, posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Trump criticized Biden’s decision to step down in a post on Truth Social, writing that his team would have to “start over” and asking to be reimbursed for the cost. At the same time, Vance got down to business, calling for Biden to step down.
Meanwhile, Democrats have a potential new candidate in the form of Vice President Kamala Harris. And as a result, the party had one of its best fundraising days ever.
