Moto2 and Moto3 have undergone a major change in tyre suppliers compared to last year, and Fermin Aldeguer, one of the main faces of the intermediate class world championship and fighting for the title, admitted that this change has already caused him several setbacks.
The rider who will be in MotoGP in 2024 – it is still unknown whether with the VR46 Racing Team or Gresini Racing – spoke to MotoSprint about the issue of tyres and how they brought him problems, especially at the beginning: ‘We didn’t start as we expected, we had some problems with the new tyres, but we are at the highest level and we are the strongest in the category.’
Currently fourth in the standings and 39 points behind leader Sergio Garcia, Aldeguer spoke of the loss of consistency from one year to the next, which has caused him some problems, with many Long Lap penalties to serve: “I’ve lost consistency, the ability to not make mistakes. I’ve made several, for example in Portimão with the early start, in Barcelona I fell when I was doing the Long Tour, where we had everything to win.”
Aldeguer said that the tyres are indeed different, but that he is in the process of learning and is feeling more and more comfortable: ‘The goal is to improve and keep this anger at bay. The Pirelli tyres are very different to the Dunlops. They are not easy to manage. There are races where we don’t use them (referring to wear), others where we have to manage them. Little by little we are understanding them more and more.’
