Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix finally made a big mistake in training camp practice. Big mistakes are inevitable, especially for rookies, but it seemed like this particular mistake sparked something in Nix.
Nix telegraphed an interception on veteran cornerback Levi Wallace, and the video understandably went a bit viral among Broncos and football Twitter.
Thankfully, that wasn’t the end of practice for Nix, nor was it the last taste left in everyone’s mouths. In fact, Nix bounced back in a big way from that throw to complete three consecutive touchdown passes, including this absolute point to tight end Greg Dulcich.
That’s the kind of pass that helped land Nix a first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The timing is perfect, the accuracy is there, and the touch Nix puts on the ball when he’s under pressure is impressive. But it wasn’t just the pass to Dulcich. Nix also completed touchdown passes to Samaje Perine and Javonte Williams in this practice session, and those in attendance were pretty impressed by the pass…
Everyone is curious as to whether or not Nix will be the team’s starting quarterback when the Broncos open their season in Seattle in just over a month. There shouldn’t be any doubt about that, though the team seems to be arguing that it’s a three-horse race between Nix, Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson. There’s no need to crown a QB1 right now, but at some point, getting the starter as many reps as possible will become the priority.
Sean Payton noted after practice that the Broncos were going to change the way they split up QB reps starting Monday when they put on the shoulder pads for the first time, so maybe we’ll have a better idea of how this starting QB competition goes then.
For now, what we have to measure is what the Broncos have said and what we’re seeing on the field. And overall, it seems that what we’ve seen on the field has been what was announced.
Nix may have revealed his position on the depth chart himself in his post-practice media availability on Saturday when asked about the season opener in Seattle, where he finished his college career at Oregon:
“I think about that a lot. It’s one of those things that I honestly hope I never forget because of the things I learned. It’s only fair that I get to start there this year and that’s where my journey in the NFL takes off. We’re going to be ready to go. We’re going to come out with some enthusiasm and hopefully we don’t let that happen again.”

At this point, it would be surprising if anyone other than Nix was the Broncos’ starter when the team faces the Seahawks in Week 1. In the meantime, we’ll see if Nix can log days in camp.
