Red Bull boss Christian Horner believes George Russell’s disqualification from the Belgian F1 Grand Prix was due to a “miscalculation” by Mercedes.
Russell was excluded from the race results at Spa-Francorchamps because his Mercedes F1 car was 1.5kg underweight.
This became clear during the post-race checks carried out by the FIA.
It has been suggested that Russell’s inspired one-stop strategy at the Belgian GP played a role.
This theory was also put forward by Horner, who gave his reaction to the news to Sky Sports News.
“Yes, of course. I’m sure you would have lost more than a kilo of rubber,” he said. “We saw it on Friday.
“You have to carry enough fuel to be able to take the sample. Otherwise, you use fuel as ballast.
“It’s very sad news for George, but it was obviously a miscalculation.”
Russell’s disqualification promoted Charles Leclerc to third place, his first podium since Monaco.
Giving his opinion on the situation, Leclerc said: “Nobody wants to make a podium with the disqualification of one of their teammates.
“They did an incredible job today. It wasn’t the weight difference that made it through. They won because they were the stronger team today.”
“However, in this kind of thing, it is difficult to make an exception and it is understandable that they were disqualified.
“It’s a shame because he and Mercedes did an incredible job. It’s part of racing.”
