Dhaka College student Faiyaz’s remand cancelled | Government tells High Court that putting Faiyaz in remand and tying him up with ropes was a mistake

The government today told the High Court that remanding Dhaka College student Hasnatul Islam Faiyaz in custody and tying him up with ropes was a mistake and that it will take steps to ensure that such mistakes are not repeated.

His judicial remand has now been cancelled and he has been sent to the Child Development Centre, Additional Public Prosecutor SM Munir told the High Court bench comprising Justice Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar and Justice SM Maniruzzaman during the hearing of a writ petition.

Supreme Court lawyer Shahdeen Malik yesterday filed a public interest litigation petition before the High Court challenging the legality of taking 17-year-old Hasnatul Islam Faiyaz on seven-day police remand in a case filed with Jatrabari police station on charges of rioting and vandalism.

The High Court today rejected the petition for protection on the grounds that the petition was not filed before it as the matter had become futile given that his pretrial detention had already been cancelled.

Shahdeen Malik and Md Monjur Alam filed the petition, while Additional Attorney General and Acting Attorney General SM Munir and Additional Attorney General Sk Md Morshed, who represented the state, opposed the petition.
